API Security Implementation

Building authentication, authorisation, input validation, rate limiting and monitoring into your APIs, protecting the data and functions they expose to apps and partners.

Overview

Why it matters
for your business.

APIs expose business logic and data directly, which makes them attractive to attackers. Common failures include endpoints returning other users’ records when an ID is changed, excessive data in responses and no limits on automated abuse. We implement controls that address the OWASP API Security Top 10 in your services and gateway.

Work covers OAuth 2.0 and JWT handling with proper validation, object-level authorisation checks, schema-based input validation, response filtering, rate limiting and quotas, secure partner credentials and API inventory to find forgotten endpoints. Security events are logged for monitoring. Where you use an API gateway, we configure policies there while keeping critical checks in the service code.

Outcomes

What changes
for your business.

Ideal for

  • Fintech platforms with partner APIs
  • Mobile app backends
  • Businesses joining open data ecosystems

Data exposure reduced

Authorisation and response filtering limit what each caller can read, reducing leakage of other users’ data.

Abuse kept in check

Rate limits and quotas make credential stuffing, scraping and automated misuse harder.

No forgotten endpoints

An up-to-date API inventory helps you retire or protect old versions attackers might target.

How we deliver

A clear, accountable
process.

Every engagement follows the same disciplined approach, adapted to the size and urgency of your project.

  1. 01

    Assess

We understand your data sources, applications or risks and agree priorities and scope.

  2. 02

    Plan

A clear approach covering tools, coverage, controls and responsibilities is agreed with you.

  3. 03

    Implement

We build the pipelines, dashboards, test suites or security controls and verify they work.

  4. 04

    Report & improve

Findings, metrics and recommendations are shared regularly so quality keeps improving.

FAQ

Common
questions.

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly.

Is an API gateway enough to secure our APIs?

A gateway helps with authentication, rate limiting and traffic control, but it usually cannot enforce business-level rules such as whether a user may access a specific record. Those checks must also live in your service code. We implement both layers.

How is this different from API testing?

API testing verifies endpoints behave correctly and finds defects. API security implementation builds and configures the protective controls themselves: authentication, authorisation, validation, rate limits and logging. Security testing afterwards then checks those controls work.
